Pursuing the Dream of a Lifetime
Conference About Fully Funded Medical School Scholarship Program in Cuba Conference To Take Place in Charleston December 13th
The opportunity for US students to study medicine in Cuba came about during a visit by the Congressional Black Caucus to Cuba in 1999. At that time, lawmakers discussed the scarcity of doctors in some of their districts, particularly in the poorest areas of the US. In response to this need, the Latin American School of Medicine offered 500 full scholarships for US students.
Rev. Lucius Walker, Jr., IFCO Executive Director is enthusiastic about the upcoming conference: "We hope to reach a diverse audience of students, medical professionals, educators, clergy and community leaders to explain the details of this fantastic scholarship opportunity."
Cuba has a global reputation for welcoming and training thousands of doctors from scores of developing countries, free of charge. The Caribbean nation is currently offering full medical school scholarships to students from 24 nations. Graduates are expected to practice medicine in where they are most needed in their own countries upon completion of their training.
The scholarship program is open to US citizens with a proven interest in medicine and a sincere dedication to practice in medically underserved communities.
People of color and people of limited means are encouraged to apply. Prior to beginning the 12-semester program, Spanish and pre-med courses are offered for all who need them.
For more information about the conference or to register, call IFCO at 212.926.5757 or email lasm@igc.org. Suggested donation for registration is $40 for adults and $15 for students.
